Showcase Summary through the eyes of Individual LearnScoper Melodie Bat
Below is my report from last week’s Flexible Learning Framework e-learning Showcase. The most important session was probably the last where the new funding opportunities and the changes to the FLF were spoken about.
My own session was ok but I tried something new - wanted to get away from the boring old powerpoint so made a timed imovie as stimulus visual while I talked. Ended up I was so nervous and misjudged my audience a little - they wanted to know tools, I gave them reflection... Ah well, part of the learning journey - know thy audience!
2008 funding
Shift to integration and embedding rather than individual learning.
Focus is on e-learning in training providers and businesses, capitalising on the knowledge and information created to date.
Guidelines still in development – more coming in next month or so and call for submissions in January.
There are 10 industry engagement programs up for grabs of $100,000 each.
Must engage industry, must use things that already exist. (Education and training is an industry)
Funding able to go over more than one year.
NT will also have its own share of funding to give out.
They are happy for us to work with them to develop our proposal.

Digital Storytelling and Innovative Practices de-brief
Day 1 saw us through different tools that may make our life just that little bit simpler by using free web2.0 technologies. Marlene did mention to be mindful of the fact that sometimes you might find a tool you really like, that 6 months later might not work anymore due to being developed by practicing uni students etc. But that most will be there for the long run the more people use them and realise how valuable they can be.
To see what we covered on day 1 go to http://darwinworkshops.wikispaces.com/.
Day 2 continued with more exciting exercises such as speed dating and through to making participants think about their own training/teaching practices.
Participants were asked to think about and to answer "What they were going to do with elearning as of Monday?" Not just I am going to start using it, but exactly what they are going to do and the purpose of it.
To listen to Participant Recordings click here.
Digital Storytelling and Innovative Practices workshop
What exactly is meant by innovative Practices?
How do you embed e-Learning into your workplace?
No idea or want to know more, then come along to this fantastic intensive 2 day workshop that will cover just that.
Please click here for Workshop Agenda.
Where: Australian Technical College, Lvl 1/ 47 Stuart Hwy Stuart Park 0820 above Dick Smiths Electronics
When: 13 and 14 September
Time: 8.30am to 3.00pm both days

Connected voices: connected learning part 3
Herewith I leave you with a link to Robyns Space for this particular workshop, which covers all the amazing tools that we have dabbled in over the last 2 days.
http://robynjay.wikispaces.com/darwin
Connected voices: connected learning part 2
Registering and adding other participants in the workshop as contacts on Flickr.com was step 2. Some uploaded photos of their own and some browsed the vast photo library available on Flickr.
Our workshop then took us to talking with Stephen Ridgeway about how they are using wikis within their institution. Participants launched into creating their own wikis on wikispaces.com, for whatever purposes they could think of at the time and started adding information to their wikis and explored the different web2.0 add ins that could be embeded within their wiki to provide information to readers.
Participants then had a chance to start their own blogger.com account. Our Chamber of Commerce LearnScope Project worked on their progress blog and looked at how they could incorporate the different web2.0 technologies to change the look and feel of their blog. Other participants started their blogs and added posts about their journey so far or focused on passions in their lives.
Day one has been full on and everyone is looking forward to Day 2 where we will be exploring the world of podcasting.
Here is an interesting video to take you on your way!
Have you been paying attention?
Connected voices: connected learning
So far today we have gone through what each participants needs are, who they are, their online identity and what they wish to get out of the workshop by the end of day 2.
Issues and needs that have been identified by Individuals are:
- teaching on the run
- doing more with less
- flexibility
- limited access
- School issues
- open vs closed
- focus on application vs pedagogy
- distance
- bandwidth/ dial up
- isolated learners = real people
- outdated infrastructure
- generational differences
- time constraints
Outcomes identified by the group are:
- online options
- real uses
- new ways to help clients
- podcasting
---> voice
After the introductions we watched a YouTube video explaining very creatively how Web 2.0, to watch the video go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gmP4nk0EOE.
We also watched a very interestingly set out video explaining RSS feeds at http://blip.tv/file/get/Leelefever-RSSInPlainEnglish369.flv.
After morning tea, participants will launch into creating a protopage to begin with creating their own online presence, which they can use to store RSS feeds to their favourite sites and blogs and all sorts of other exciting add ons.

Copyright Kitchen Workshop
Then this workshop is or for you!!!
SITAC is running a FREE Copyright Kitchen Professional Development Workshop on the 9th of August in the SITAC Boardroom at Winlow House on 75 Woods St Darwin. Topics that will be covered are as follows:
Copyright Kitchen
Just in time learning about copyright, a simple tool to add to your resources. This workshop gives an overview behind the development of the copyright kitchen and the logic it uses. Then the workshop will look at the kitchen, how to identify your ingredients and cook your questions to come up with an answer to your copyright inquiry.
Copyright Essentials
Copyright like most things has changed a lot recently, particularly in the education sector. The online environment has opened a lot of opportunities, such as digital resources, chat rooms, bulletin boards and online repositories, but it has also brought responsibilities. A major player in information law is copyright, this session will briefly explore how the copyright law applies in the education and online environment, and the practical considerations in managing education in today’s vocational environment.
Workshop 2:
The who owns what dilemma, and what can they do with it. Whether you are a private provider or a public one, that intangible area of quality service, what your learners learn that makes them valuable to employers, branding is important. This workshop explores the copyright issues of this area, who owns materials developed, and what can the provider – teacher/trainer do with them.
If you are interested in attending please contact Katharina on 08 8942 1651 or admin@sitac.com.au to register. Please see attached for Workshop agenda.
e-Designer Clint Workshop
The workshop kicked off with a group exercise to find out what e-learning means to each participant. It then continued into a session on how the Designing e-Learning website was started and the different categories of e-Learning that were researched and what each category means.
Clint then gave a brief Overview on the Designing e-Learning website and where content can be found and to the sites intended use.
To be continued...
Second Life Wonders
I'm still actively exploring the wonderful world of Second Life. I have come across quite the range of interesting places. Georgina Nou from DeadlyMob and I meet up in there quite frequently. Here we are in an amazing place, built with Liquid Art. Don't ask me to explain, because as yet I'm not too sure what it means myself. - Human - Good and Evil
- Dwarf - Good
- Orc - Evil
- Elf - Good
- Drow - Evil
- Faery - Good and Evil
Greetings from Alice
I've been in Alice Springs over the last couple of days visiting the Institute for Aboriginal Development to catch up with Lee Ting and see how their LearnScope project was progressing. They are going great guns with lots of new things being learnt, and very little time to do it in!!
I was able to let Lee Ting know that there was a CAETN (watch this space for the red hot link to DesEd space, says Alicia Boyle) workshop with the wonderful Bill Wade happening the very next day - demystifying the world of audio. Exactly the sort of thing that Lee Ting said she was interested in.
In the workshop the next day, Bill not only showed people the intricacies of audio101, but introduced people to the wonderful world of blogging. By 3pm, everyone, even the self identified newbies, were ignoring Bill and happily blogging away. A fantastic outcome.
Bill shows Gail from Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, a finer point of the world of the blogger.
It's not been that cold in Alice, but it was a challenge pulling out the winter woolies to cope with the milder temperatures of the red centre.
Cheers

m-Learning Workshop for beginners
Then this is just the thing for you….
You maybe asking yourself what exactly is m-Learning?
The definition from Wikipedia suggest that it means the following:
m-learning, or "mobile learning", now commonly abbreviated to "m-Learning", has different meanings for different communities. The term covers:
· learning with portable technologies, where the focus is on the technology (which could be in a fixed location, such as a classroom);
· learning across contexts, where the focus is on the mobility of the learner, interacting with portable or fixed technology;
· learning in a mobile society, with a focus on how society and its institutions can accommodate and support the learning of an increasingly mobile population.
To find out how m-Learning can work for you and the wonderful resources that can be created for using Mobile technologies, come along to our workshop on:

2007 Induction Workshop
Please click here to view the Induction Program. On this program please pay particular attention to the list at the bottom of the page, which tells you what you are required to bring for the day.
As part of this workshop you are required to share 2 stories with the group (see Induction program). Here is a link to a fantastic video on YouTube about storytelling that may get the thinking progress started for you in how you are going to tell your story and what you will include. Go to http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ira+glass+storytelling. Please note your stories will be recorded on the day to be posted to the NT LearnScope wiki on your project page. So have a really good think about what it is you are going to talk about.
If you have not done so already, please note that all LearnScopers need to be registered to the NT LearnScope Forum on EdNA Groups, as this is our main method of getting information through to you and this also gives you a chance to share your information with the other LearnScopers. Attached is a step by step guide on how to do this. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to give me a buzz. Please encourage your team members to join. If you would like to have a Forum set up especially for your team in which you will share information about your project with us, please let me know and I will arrange this for you.
If you have any queries in relation to this email or the up-coming Induction Workshop, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Melanie.
Please RSVP your attendance and that of any additional project team members to me by Monday the 2nd of April, so that we may organize catering as required.
